SD Upgrade Overview:

The Loc3-5 and Loc3-10 transmitters from Vivax-Metrotech had a special “SD” (Signal Direction) frequency in them as a standard frequency.  Using this frequency, you can see that the line to which the transmitter is connected is in fact the target line.

Usually, when a transmitter is connected to a target line, the signal travels along it and finds the easiest way to travel back.  This path is usually via the ground and ground stake.  However, very often the signal will travel back along the adjacent cables or pipes.   You can lose your target line because these pipes and cables offer an easier route for the signal.

Because of this tendency, there can be multiple signals radiating from cables and pipes in the area. Consequently, in these situations identifying the target line is difficult. These return signals are typically traveling in the opposite direction than the applied signal.  The Signal Direction feature in the 5 and 10 watt transmitters identifies which direction the signal is flowing and hence the target line.

When using a receiver with the SD feature, the LCD on the receiver will show a directional arrow.  This arrow will point away from the location of the transmitter to show that you are on the correct cable.  When the arrow on the receiver LCD is pointing towards the transmitter, you are on the line that has bled off in its route returning back to the ground.

Compatibility:

Receiver SD Upgrades are available for the vLoc3-ProvLocPro2, and vLoc3-ML.
